Extortion targeting members of Winnipeg’s Punjabi business community is a serious issue. Any business owner who feels threatened because of their success, their background or their immigration status deserves protection. On that point, there should be no debate.

The Manitoba government recently announced $100,000 for the Punjabi Chamber of Commerce to expand outreach, connect businesses with police and help establish a helpline for victims and witnesses. A summit followed, bringing together the province, law enforcement and community leaders. Premier Wab Kinew said business owners should not have to fear for their safety. Justice Minister Matt Wiebe acknowledged that some victims may be afraid to come forward.
