Two polls fielded this July by HarrisX tell us much that we need to know about where the public stands on artificial intelligence.

The first, a HarrisX national survey from July, found that 56% of voters view AI favorably, and 71% consider it the beginning of a new industrial revolution.

The second, the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll, registered what appears to be a contradictory public opinion on AI. Two-thirds of voters want the United States to slow AI development, and 68% want stronger safeguards.

These findings, however, do not contradict each other. Read together, they show that the public is doing exactly what a thoughtful public should do: recognizing a genuine opportunity and insisting that it be pursued responsibly. People see the AI promise and the AI peril.
