The second night of the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, this week featured racist remarks from speakers and a call for violence against Democrats from an audience member — before concluding with President Donald Trump demanding a loyalty oath from viewers.

At one point, while arguing why voters should back Republicans in the midterms, Vice President JD Vance objected to the GOP being described as racist. While attempting to refute that idea, Vance invoked several racist tropes about immigrants.

“We were tired of being called ‘racist’ for noticing that our country was becoming dirtier, and poor, and less safe, and less prosperous,” Vance said.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz used his speech to vilify specific Democratic figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, and others.

Cruz complained that Mamdani “wants to seize the means of production,” a reference to his democratic socialist beliefs. Cruz also made bigoted remarks about El-Sayed, baselessly suggesting that El-Sayed’s past comments on his own personal religious views mean that he has an “obligation to Sharia Law.”
