Ontario Premier Doug Ford said a homeowner in Vaughan should have shot the men who invaded his home a few more times. Ford was reacting to the latest home invasion story in the GTA during a news conference on Wednesday morning.

Ford went far beyond what most politicians would say in endorsing the homeowner, a legal and licenced gun owner who fired and hit one of the men.

“Congratulations. Yeah, I’m glad you shot the guy,” Ford said. “Congratulations for shooting this guy. Should have shot him a couple more times, as far as I’m concerned.”

Critics of Ford will say that kind of language is inappropriate for an elected official, that it could jeopardize the case when it gets to court. An awful lot of Canadians, though, will be nodding along in agreement with what the premier said, especially when they find out more about the perp.

Just around the time Ford was making his comments, York Regional Police released more info about the man they were charging in this home invasion.

Trestin Cassanova-Alman is well known to police and readers of the Toronto Sun, which covered his July 2020 arrest for a carjacking. In that instance, an eight-year-old girl was in the truck when the carjacking occurred, so Cassanova-Alman threw her out of it near Burnhamthorpe Rd. and Confederation Pkwy.

He was out on bail on drug charges at the time of that violent crime.

Last December, York Regional Police announced they had busted a violent criminal organization responsible for home invasions across Ontario and Quebec. Cassanova-Alman wasn’t arrested as part of that bust but was named by police as wanted for conspiracy to commit murder, robbery and a number of other offences.

This guy is one bad dude.

Facing charges of breaking probation order

After he was shot in the early hours of March 17 in the botched home invasion, police were able to pick him up after he went to a local hospital to seek treatment. In addition to facing charges of robbery with a firearm and disguise with intent, Cassanova-Alman is also facing charges for breaching his probation order.

Yes, I know you are shocked. When he committed this home invasion and when police named him for all those other charges back in December, he was out on probation.

In fact, he has eight breach of probation offences awaiting him.

Ford ‘sick and tired of it’

“You know, they always want to protect the bad guys,” Premier Ford said. “The judges always want to protect the Charter of Rights. How about the Charter of Rights of the people to keep them safe, rather than always protecting these criminals? I’m just sick and tired of it.”

He encouraged the federal government to get moving on bail reform. The Carney government promised to toughen Canada’s weak bail laws last spring shortly after the election.

They introduced the legislation in October, but it didn’t pass the House until a month ago and is now working its way through the Senate.

Ford said when it comes to crime, the Carney Liberals are focused on the wrong target.

“And by the way, the federal government is spending so much time on going after legal, law abiding gun owners that safely store their guns, safely store their ammunition, they’re hunters or they’re sport shooters,” Ford said.

“I have an idea, rather than wasting hundreds of millions of dollars going after legal gun owners, why don’t you spend that 100, hundreds of millions of dollars going after the bad guys?”

The remarkable thing in this instance is that York Regional Police didn’t charge the homeowner as has happened in far too many cases. YRP should be commended for properly applying the criminal code which allows the use of force to defend yourself or your home in cases like this.

The scary part is how often there are cases like this in Toronto and vicinity these days.
