My husband and I aren’t on the same page financially, and it’s causing a lot of friction. He’s more financially conservative and puts a lot of time and energy into managing our financial affairs. He’s always looking to save and invest more. While I appreciate his efforts, I also think we should be enjoying our wealth and life more. It’s exhausting when we’re out shopping or on holiday, and he’s always looking for the cheaper alternative, when we can easily afford the more expensive one. How can we create harmony?
In my experience, this is pretty common. There is often one person in a relationship who is a little (or a lot) more financially conservative than the other.
This can range from being the penny-pincher who is always trying to save a few dollars on groceries, to being the spreadsheet guru who has every dollar charted and analysed. It’s both a blessing and a curse, really.
So, how do you deal with that gap? Here’s what I tell my clients. These tips apply on both sides, whether you’re the more or less financially conservative party in the relationship.
