The real NRL ladder, finals race and brutal injury tolls – explained in eight graphics

And so, to the final eight weeks of the NRL season we go, with Origin in the rearview mirror and the top eight to be decided.

Even with Thursday’s stirring upset of frontrunners Penrith, reigning premiers Brisbane need victories at every post to squeak into the finals, and an eight-game winning run may still not be enough.

The ups and downs of the 10 sides clustered between third and 14th on the NRL ladder make for one big, unpredictable mess.

As always, injuries, bumps, bruises and those that actually make it onto the paddock will dictate who finishes where.

Set restarts will play their part, as will emerging playmakers and surprise trends lost among the Origin hullabaloo.

So, how to make sense of the top-eight race? These eight graphics are as good a place as any to start. Especially when you remember to take the byes out of all ladder calculations.
