Scott Begbie: Why the voices of unity still outnumber the shouts of hate from anti asylum protesters in Aberdeen
A funny thing happened on my way to a tasty lunch at Rosemount on Saturday … I stumbled across the Aberdeen Unity March.
The first clue I had that anything was going on was when I realised Union Street was closed beyond the roadworks bit. As I walked through Union Terrace Gardens, I heard lots of noise and hubbub.
It was only when I emerged up by the Wallace Statue that I saw all the flags and the crowds of folk gathered on Union Terrace doing what right-thinking people should be doing … saying, shouting, that racism is not welcome in Aberdeen.
And they did it while waving banners calling for peace and justice in the world’s troubled places and for tolerance and dignity right here on our own doorstep in the Granite City.
Which is exactly how it should be. This city has a long and proud tradition of welcoming all........
