This essay was originally delivered as a speech at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts at Michigan State University on Tuesday.

Let me start in the year 2004. The New York Times is a thriving company in a thriving industry. It boasts a best-in-class product, an esteemed brand and a uniquely influential readership. Many call it the greatest newspaper in the world. But it has grown to be much more than that: a diversified media conglomerate with over 12,000 employees and $3 billion in revenue.
