We have now entered into a political sphere where One Nation, with a whole one MP in the lower house and a rag tag conspiracy of senators, is influencing the nation’s policies.

One Nation seems to have more influence over Labor policy than the Labor caucus.

As Rachel Withers, writing in Crikey, pointed out, the major parties are worried about being called nannies or wowsers by One Nation. So they are doing all they can to make sure people know they are beer-drinking, punt-taking larrikins just having a laugh, as they argue about melons (because they are agreed on the policy), and who loves America more.

One Nation was a focus of Penny Wong’s Lowy Institute Gyngell lecture, despite her deliberately not naming the party.

Because One Nation is the Australian political Babadook. It is everywhere and nowhere and despite Labor and Coalition MPs and power players consistently reassuring people it’s going to peter out, or it’s a soft vote, or they have a handle on it, both parties are jumping at One Nation’s shadow and incorporating it into their own policies and rhetoric.
