Israel is not a party to the US-Iran negotiations—and its private war against Hezbollah could have far-reaching impacts elsewhere in the Middle East.
The recently-announced US-Iran ceasefire framework has reduced tensions across much of the Middle East, particularly in the Persian Gulf region at the epicenter of the recent war. In spite of the ceasefire, however, the Israeli military has proceeded with its operations in Lebanon, and tensions remain high. Indeed, Israel has vowed to continue operations despite the broader diplomatic breakthrough—functionally decoupling the Lebanon front from the larger ceasefire process. Why is Israel continuing operations when everyone else is working to deescalate?
