A Leader is one whose presence makes a difference among men, who could be in thousands or in millions. If the leader is not distinguishable among hordes of men, he ceases to be a true leader. The pre-eminence must be visible. Invariably has to be first among equals. (Primus inter pares).

Leadership's visibility is important. However, the visibility factor is governed by who the followers are. For a politician, visibility is critical; it is, however, not so much a compelling need for a corporate leader. However, in both situations, be it the field of politics or any other arena, followers prefer to see their 'leader'. In today's world, where the media is always in a state of frenzy, not merely to report events, but also to intrude into the personal lives of public leaders, visibility is inevitable. It cannot be controlled too tightly, unless coercion or threat is used to subdue. Free and irresponsible media is a carte blanche weapon to demonise or humble any type of leadership.

In the corporate world, too much visibility is actually not desirable. A friendly leader is invariably taken advantage of. The adage holds good that familiarity breeds contempt; it also fosters incompetence.
