The American leaders of strong conviction in the power of the multitude or the collective force of society, ardent believers in democratic governance, safety, wellbeing and happiness of the people, liberated their vast lands from Great Britain and adopted the final Declaration of Independence two days later, on July 4, 1776. The modern federal governing structure is the creation of the USA Constitution, which went into effect 13 years after independence — in 1789.

The USA went through an intensive phase of industrialisation in the 19th century, becoming an economic power to reckon with. The USA was able to surpass the British Empire economically in the last decade of the 19th century — precisely in 1890. The First World War (July 1914-November 1918) weakened empires and powerful coalitions politically, economically and strategically. The British Empire, in particular, was hit hard. The political and economic decline of the major powers proved unstoppable.

The Second World War (September 1939-September 1945) catapulted the USA as the political and military leader of the world, causing the instant demise of many empires, including the British Empire. The Soviet Union, resulting from the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918, emerged as a countervailing force to the USA throughout the Cold War (1947-1991).
