Lawmakers must face down New York's urgent long-term care crisis

Chronic underfunding has pushed New York’s long-term care providers to a breaking point — putting access to quality care for older New Yorkers increasingly at risk. It has been a budget conversation for the last several years, providers and advocates warn that high-quality providers are downsizing and closing their doors, yet the state has delayed meaningful action to address the root of inadequate funding. This leaves nonprofit providers struggling to keep pace with rising costs, competitive wages for employees and growing regulatory demands.

The funding crisis impacts the full continuum of long-term care and the various services someone may need as they age and their needs change. LeadingAge New York has tracked provider closures for years, and now, the pace of closures is accelerating at an alarming rate.
