When fire broke out in January 2025 in a building attached to the West Kill post office — causing extensive smoke damage to the building and forcing its closure — residents of the small rural hamlet in the Greene County town of Lexington lost more than a convenient place to get their Christmas cards.

They lost a part of their community.
