Huey P Long, the authoritarian, populist governor of Louisiana in the 1920/30s, nearly made it to the White House.
He’s the real-life individual on whom Robert Penn Warren based his Pulitzer-winning novel All The Kings Men. Willie Stark, Penn Warren’s central character, was fatally shot – just like Long.
After Long’s murder, Life magazine wrote that “he had all the traits of the dissembling demagogue”.
Once asked by a journalist “Do you think we will ever have fascism in America?”, the wily governor replied: “Sure, but we will call it anti-fascism.”
