How to survive the first weeks of motherhood (and stay sane)
I HAD a baby six weeks ago, and I left the hospital days later feeling well-rested, basking in a newborn glow and in the possession of a free manual and guidebook telling me everything I could ever need to know about the feral little creature I now needed to keep alive and teach to be a good person.
I didn’t actually have any of this.
Well, I did have a baby six weeks ago, but photographic evidence of his trip home two days later shows a tiny little creature with two exhausted, shell-shocked and terrified adults, who seem both very in love with the creature and completely flummoxed as to what they’re actually meant to do with him.
It’s lucky I have this evidence really, because the whole thing was a slightly out-of-body experience for me, which passed in a blur.
