Blumenthal: Trump’s order to reform college sports ‘is theater, not a fix’

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Friday dismissed President Trump’s executive order targeting eligibility and transfer rules in college sports as “theater.”

“Trump’s college sports Executive Order is theater, not a fix,” Blumenthal wrote in a post on social platform X. “Reform requires Congressional legislation — I have put commonsense bills & proposals on the table for safeguards & rules for competition.”

The president signed the order on Friday, which directs the NCAA governing body to update its guidelines to cap student athletes’ eligibility at five years. It also restricts undergraduate transfers to only one without a waiting period.

The order further seeks to crack down on what Trump called “fraudulent” name, image and likeness (NIL) deals — when athletes are paid beyond market value — and proposes creating a national registry of student........
