But for those born after 1943, political ideology became a reliable predictor of family size.

As the researchers note, higher education accelerates this divide. Women now earn 58 percent of all bachelor’s degrees, and university campuses tilt heavily toward progressive politics. This extended academic timeline delays marriage, trading early family formation for career building. The campus functions as an ideological funnel, leaving the highest-scoring students on standardized tests with the lowest reproductive rates. Academics have engineered a bizarre biological paradox: the most credentialed segment of society is choosing genetic extinction, leaving the future to the children of subcultures that skip the university pipeline entirely.
