MAHA voters feel betrayed — Republicans proceed at their own risk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may have handed Republican leaders a political grenade with the pin pulled.

On June 1, the agency awarded Pfizer contracts worth roughly $1.24 billion for COVID-19 vaccines for the remainder of fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, including hundreds of millions for pediatric doses and additional funds for adults.

The award raises serious questions: What demand projections, dose assumptions, or safety rationale justified such a purchase? And why would the government commit more than a billion taxpayer dollars to a product many Americans have stopped using, and which some no longer trust?

As of spring 2026, uptake for the COVID-19 vaccine was quite low. Nine percent of children were getting it and 17 percent of adults. Only 3 percent of parents plan to have it given to their children.

For those “Make America Healthy Again” voters essential to President Trump’s 2024 coalition, the optics are hard to ignore: The government that promised health reform has committed massive public funds to Pfizer, even as trust in and use of their product collapses.

The contract also moved forward despite the unresolved legal status of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. A court had stayed the members appointed by Secretary Robert Kennedy and their votes, and the administration failed to appeal for six weeks. The panel remains in limbo, meaning Washington committed more than $1 billion to Pfizer through a broken legitimizing process.

This is not a bureaucratic footnote for the millions who backed Trump in 2024 as part of his coalition: It is a gut punch.
