The court sided with Trump on two big immigration cases:
The Supreme Court handed the Trump administration two major wins today on its immigration push, expanding its power to restrict migrants.
The first case — cutting off some legal protections: The Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration can cut off temporary legal protections for thousands of Haitians and Syrians. The ruling was 6-3 along ideological lines.
Remember: “The Trump administration has sought to terminate more than a dozen countries from Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program that allows citizens of designated countries to be protected from deportation and receive a pathway to work authorization.” Read more on the case
The second case — turning back asylum seekers: The Supreme Court ruled the government can legally turn back asylum seekers who are attempting to reach the U.S. but have not physically crossed onto U.S. soil yet. The ruling was also 6-3 along the same ideological lines, with the court’s three liberal justices dissenting.
This means the Trump administration can bring back a now-rescinded immigration policy if it decides to do so. Read more on the case
