GOP candidate Erin Stewart drops out of Connecticut governor’s race

Erin Stewart, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Connecticut, dropped out of the race on Thursday just days ahead of the scheduled primary.

Stewart left the GOP primary battle amid allegations of fraud from her service as mayor of New Britain.

The GOP candidate is accused of spending $207,076.07 on a government-issued credit card while serving as New Britain’s mayor without providing any supporting documentation regarding the use of the funds. 

“I take the allegations that have been made against me very seriously. And for that reason, I am suspending my gubernatorial campaign effective immediately so that I can focus on addressing those claims,” Stewart wrote in a Thursday letter posted to the social platform X. 

“Yesterday I requested copies of the relevant documents and I will be reviewing them carefully. I will take accountability for any mistakes, and I intend to make full and complete restitution to the City of New Britain-my home-for anything that I owe,” she added, noting the decision was “extraordinarily difficult.”

The fraud claims against her stemmed from an investigation by Crumbie Law Group, a local firm that was enlisted to review the charges by current New Britain Mayor Bobby Sanchez (D).
