Dear Zach Bryan: We Went Home. They Did Not on Oct. 7.

Zach Bryan looked out over 73,538 people, a Gillette Stadium record, and told us he hoped this was the best night of our lives. I was in the crowd. He had already made it impossible.

The night had everything a night like that is supposed to have. A family caravan for the fans among us. A lead singer with an infectious smile, piercing eyes, and a band loud enough to shake the place. Guys and girls screaming at the top of their lungs. Gigantic video boards with GILLETTE stretched across the top. At one point the screens flashed video of Matthew McConaughey, the kind of borrowed cool a stadium act uses when it wants to feel like more than a concert. Zach saluted police and veterans. I noticed that. But it couldn’t erase the shirt.

Sleeves cut off, the way he always wears them: FREE PALESTINE across the chest, and under it a pine tree and the words AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN. Half the band was not in the costume. That mattered to me. It meant the choice was not the price of admission for everyone on the stage. It was his.

He didn’t explain it. He didn’t have to.

The garment was the statement.

And the setting mattered. This was Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. Super Bowl banners hung overhead. Championship history surrounded us. This was Robert Kraft’s building.
