KATY GORDON: Is Perth and Kinross Council trying to kill our city?
It is starting to feel a lot like Groundhog Day…
Only in part because I’m laughing like I’m watching the fantastic early-90s Bill Murray movie.
But because once again Perth and Kinross Council is making suggestions that seem as though they are trying to completely kill Perth city centre.
This week it’s the decision to do a consultation about “reallocating road space to make city centre improvements”.
They say that this can be done without “significant negative traffic impacts”, but I’d hazard an educated guess that the word “significant” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that statement.
This is a prime example of political speak. Put in an unmeasurable adjective and then you can hold up your hands and say “well significant is a subjective word”.
As my colleague Morag Lindsay reported earlier this week, these improvements could include giving more space to sustainable methods of transport including walking, buses and cycling.
And yet this isn’t going to cause significant negative impact to vehicles? I doubt that very much.
Changes to roads will impact drivers
The fact is that in order to “reallocate road space”, to use the council’s terminology, you would be unallocating it........
