I have two super funds with different strategies. Which should I choose?

I have two super funds (not ideal, I know!). In one, my money is in the default balanced fund. In the other, I’m in an option that relates to my year of birth. I phoned the fund to find out what this is all about, and they told me it is more aggressively invested when I’m young, and then gets more conservative as I get older. That sounds pretty sensible.

So, should I be rolling my balanced fund into this? With two different approaches, presumably they can’t both be right?

It certainly makes sense to invest as aggressively as possible when retirement is distant. Aggressive investments are more volatile, but since you can’t access your super until at least age 60, what does that matter? The compensation you get for tolerating the volatility is higher returns, which means you have more money to spend in retirement.

As you approach retirement, say two to five years out, it would be sensible to step back the risk a little. This is to........
