A worthwhile experience might start with sports, but it can be so much more

Some years ago in one of my SBJ Sutton Impact columns, I described the elements of WORTH and their importance in creating an experience. Those elements included:

WORTH allocating resources for (time, money and emotion); WORTH repeating; WORTH recommending; WORTH remembering.

In 2012, I purchased such an experience from Anthony Travel and went to Ireland for the Navy/Notre Dame football game. I went with my wife, Sharon, and some friends of ours. That trip became my gold standard of a memorable experience. The experience left an impression with me that resurfaced when I was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery in 2024. At that time, I made it a priority to plan a memorable experience with my family.

When I saw the announcement that my hometown Pittsburgh Steelers would be playing a regular-season game in Dublin, Sharon and I reached out to our sons (Jason and Dan and their spouses, Maria and Linda) to see if they were interested in such a trip and heard a resounding “Yes.” As all of my grad assistants can attest, I am great with ideas, but not great at attending to details. Therefore, hoping to avoid a “Vacation” Griswold family experience, we decided to purchase an all-inclusive package from On Location. I should point out that Anthony Travel has evolved into part of On Location, so my “worth remembering” played a role in my decision.
