Bay Area driver frustration triggers updated Highway 101 rules

Following a traffic analysis and pushback from commuters and county transit officials, Caltrans announced Wednesday it’s adopting new hours for the high-occupancy vehicle lanes on Highway 101 in the North Bay. Drivers can expect fresh signs displaying the updated hours along the highway between Marin and Sonoma counties as early as late February.

Across 52 miles between the two counties, the weekday HOV hours available to vehicles with two or more people are amending: 6-9 a.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. Caltrans said it based these hours on a traffic analysis that it completed this month.

Caltrans spokesperson Matt O’Donnell told SFGATE that the agency had been monitoring traffic since updating HOV hours in the fall and that the latest change was always a part of its process. He added that North Bay commuter input was another factor in the decision-making.
