Burning Man's real enemy isn't the heat
Burning Man is known for many things, but mild weather is not one of them.
Last summer, the 70,000-person desert throwdown kicked off with severe duststorms and rain that damaged infrastructure and injured participants. And back in 2023, torrential downpours turned Black Rock City’s playa into a mess of thick mud, trapping many attendees.
Though news reports of stranded celebrities and perilous hikes out of the desert painted scenes of catastrophe, for longtime Burners, that was actually a pretty good time. The Black Rock Desert has always been unforgiving, and that has historically been part of the appeal.

But as the impacts of climate change ramp up in the desert, fueling record heat and stronger storms, Burning Man’s demographics are also shifting.
The festival is losing iconic camps and attendees due to financial burden, and fewer young people are showing up year over year. Those who can still afford to attend the increasingly costly event are prioritizing comfort, meaning more power-hungry RVs equipped with air conditioning, and subsequently more emissions from generators.

The Burning Man Project is adapting, launching massive sustainability efforts in recent years that include more solar-powered energy at Black Rock City. But as the resilience of Burners is continually tested, some insiders are saying that the biggest existential threat to Burning Man is not climate change itself, but whether enough people will continue wanting to deal with it.

When the desert gets hotter
Nevada and its Black Rock Desert have long experienced arid, hot weather. But as climate change causes temperatures to rise, it’s not just the heat that becomes increasingly problematic.
Since the 1960s, Nevada’s average annual temperature has increased by a few degrees Fahrenheit, according to Nevada deputy climatologist Thomas Albright, and the state is heating up faster than the national average.

Nevada is on track to have its hottest year on record, according to Albright, and this past spring was the second hottest for the state since 1895. That warming can have significant effects on the weather patterns. When it comes to precipitation, Albright said a warmer atmosphere creates a “greater capacity for greater precipitation-producing events.”

“Even if that average precipitation might not go up, we might see bigger extreme events coming from this,” Albright said. He added........
