With the holidays coming up, I am dreading my party neighbors. When we first moved in, their kids were young, but now they have one adult child still living at home.

The problem arises when the parents go out of the country for a month. The son has disrespectful friends who are over at all hours. Now, I don’t mind one or two late-night parties a year, but these are 24-hour parties, and it doesn’t have to be a Saturday night.
Once, the mother arrived back early last year — with her cameras disabled — to find the house in shambles.
Others have called the police, but I’ve only called once in 10 years. I did go over two years ago and banged on the door, and they quieted down for three hours before starting up again. Although I hate to call the non-emergency line over a party, we really need to make some consequences. What is your advice?

Dear Over the noise,
If it’s been two years since you last spoke with the son, it’s well worth talking to him again. Find a time before the next party occurs, since doing it during a party itself is likely to heighten feelings all around. If they quieted for a few hours when you did speak with them, at least they are somewhat aware that their noise levels are disturbing to the neighbors. But they may be so focused on the fun of it all that they don’t have the whole picture. Outline your concerns in a calm, civil manner, and the impact that the noise has on you, and see if you can at least come up with a solution for the overnight hours when the noise will most affect you.
You can also talk to the mother in her capacity as a parent and a homeowner, even........
