Heritage Day was originally designated as a national day to celebrate our heritage and in the early days, the hope was it would become a national holiday.

In 1974, the Ontario Heritage Foundation, later renamed the Ontario Heritage Trust (OHT), set aside the third Monday of February for that purpose. But in 2007, when then-premier Dalton McGuinty turned that day into a statutory holiday, he named it Family Day instead of Heritage Day. So, though we get a holiday that day, it is not officially to celebrate our heritage.
