5 of the happiest states in America in 2026, ranked
These five states ranked highest in a 2026 study measuring happiness across health, work, community and financial well-being
Happiness can be hard to measure. It is personal, unpredictable and shaped by everything from relationships and health to money, work and the place you call home. Still, where you live can have a surprisingly big effect on how satisfied you are with everyday life.
According to Reader’s Digest, a new ranking of the happiest states in America attempts to put some numbers behind that idea. According to the report, scoring goes beyond obvious factors such as sunny weather and beautiful scenery.
Reader’s Digest’s look at the 2026 ranking considers far more than whether residents seem satisfied with where they live. The study weighs factors such as depression rates, life satisfaction, unemployment, work hours, volunteer rates, sleep and financial security.

Some score well on life satisfaction and physical health, while others benefit from strong emotional well-being, supportive relationships or financial security. Work also plays a role, with factors such as unemployment, hours worked, and economic stability helping shape the results. Community connections, income growth, and environmental conditions round out the picture, showing that happiness can depend on a surprisingly wide range of factors.
That makes the top of the list less about finding a perfect place to live and more about the different ways a state can contribute to people’s well-being.
Here are five of the happiest states in America in 2026.
