Fidelity's 401(k) millionaires surged 30% in a year as retirement balances hit records

The rebound follows a market sell-off earlier in the year, though a rising share of workers also tapped their accounts for emergency cash

Fidelity Investments reported Thursday that average 401(k) balances reached an all-time high of $155,800 in the second quarter of 2026, a 13.1% increase from a year earlier. Fidelity, which administers more 401(k) plans than any other firm in the country, said the result was the best quarterly showing since the fourth quarter of 2020.

The average IRA balance also hit a record, rising 10% year over year to $144,523 in the second quarter, the company said. Gains were driven by a market rebound following a sell-off........
