Who Cares for the Person Caring for the Pet?

The other day, during an interview, someone asked what topics come up in my clinical work when clients talk about their pets. As I listened to my own answer, I noticed that I was talking about bonds, connection, and the support animals provide. That made me realize that pets also come up in conversations about stress, the challenges of caregiving, grief, of course, as an important aspect, and the difficulty of caring for an animal when you are dealing with a significant mental health issue yourself.

Although we are beginning to discuss the complexity of the bond between people and animals, I think that complexity is still often obscured by a romanticized view of that bond. This view may have an impact on how the bond with companion animals is addressed in daily conversations or in clinical conversations.

Examining the Impact of Companion Animal Bonds on Mental Health

The connection between the field of human–animal interaction and applying this knowledge in clinical settings is still emerging, particularly when it comes to understanding what to ask and how to approach issues related to the bond with companion animals when they arise in therapy.
