Why Love Must Guide Us Through the Age of Superintelligence
I’ve spent decades building businesses and technologies and watching innovations reshape our world. But nothing has kept me awake at night quite like artificial intelligence (AI), and I’m worried about the trajectory we’re on right now.
What is that trajectory? Well, just a few months ago, researchers built the Darwin Gödel Machine, which is “a self-improving system that iteratively modifies its own code.” This is one of the many canaries in the coalmine, and it tells us where we’re heading: self-evolving AI systems, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and, ultimately, superintelligence that could dwarf human cognitive abilities by several orders of magnitude.
In my recent book TRANSCEND, I explored how AI forces us to confront the deepest questions about human nature and our capacity for growth. And after years of thinking about the challenges raised by AI, I’ve come to believe that while technical solutions are crucial, they’re not enough. We need something deeper: a fundamental commitment to love........
