The Psychology of Minimalism

Minimalism helps people feel more in control of their lives and clearer headed.

Minimalism also saves time. The less possessions you have, the less time spent organizing them.

If you want to be more minimalist, make decluttering and donating belongings a regular habit.

Now that I have a five and a nine-year-old, I feel like my role has shifted to Organizer of All the Things. My children have acquired a quantity of toys and clothes that feels overwhelming and relentless.

When it was just me, I lived in a studio apartment. It was about 300 square feet of minimalist simplicity. I had the exact right amount of clothes and books. I could imagine in my mind’s eye all my possessions because everything had its place. Even though it was a tiny apartment, there was room to breathe because of the lack of clutter.

Now, I’m constantly battling other people’s possessions. They’re kids, so they tend toward maximalism. More is more is more. Sometimes........
