Why a 10-Minute "Very Slow Jog" Boosts Mood and Brain Power

Accumulating evidence suggests that hitting 10,000 steps a day isn't the only way to unlock the health benefits of daily movement. Three recent 2026 studies show that slightly increasing your gait speed or walking continuously for 13 to 36 minutes significantly lowers both mortality and dementia risk.

But if you're looking for an immediate mood boost and prefrontal cortex activation, you might want to change your biomechanics rather than your pace. Another new 2026 study found that keeping your speed exactly the same—but picking up your feet to break into a super-slow, 10-minute jog—rapidly increases happiness and enhances executive function.

The Neuroscience of a Super-Slow Jog

A wealth of science links cardiovascular exercise to better cognitive and mental health. However, researchers are increasingly interested in the absolute minimum dose of exercise—in terms of intensity, duration, and frequency—required to trigger neurological benefits.

The latest (2026) "slow running benefits" study published in Imaging Neuroscience set out to find the minimum intensity threshold for running needed to improve mood and prefrontal cognition. Led by Hideaki Soya at the University of Tsukuba, researchers had 24 healthy adults complete a 10-minute "super-slow" running session on a treadmill.
