Artificial intelligence (AI) is intertwined with our daily lives, from personal assistants on Apple Watches, iPhones, and tablets to chatbots offering customer service to drones increasingly changing the nature of war. Because AI manifests in technology, engineers tend to think about how many technical features can be included or added: more power, touch screens, and even more buttons. At the consumer level, insufficient thought may be given to insightfully understanding and simplifying the intuitive media psychology influence on AI technology use.

As the new president of Philips Interactive Media, the first TV/computer remotes I inherited in developing TV-based CD had more than 10 buttons on every controller because the digital engineers wanted to maximize the "buttonograpy." I argued for only an intuitive thumb stick and two buttons to control all features. For a period of time, we built the two-button version, and so did much of the gaming industry, and the response was dramatic. Within a year after my departure from Philips, engineering-dominated thinking reverted to maximizing the multibutton........
