Recovery from substance use disorder is often described as a process of breaking physical dependence. Increasingly, research suggests it is also a process of retraining the brain—in other words, overcoming psychological dependence.[1,2,3]
Substance use affects many of the systems responsible for motivation, reward, emotional regulation, stress response, and decision-making. Over time, repeated exposure to drugs or alcohol can alter neural pathways associated with cravings and habit formation, making recovery challenging even after physical withdrawal has ended.[4,5]
Addressing the Underlying Patterns That Contribute to Relapse
This has led researchers and clinicians to explore approaches that address not only behavior but also the underlying stress and emotional patterns that contribute to relapse. Among these approaches, meditation and structured breathing practices have gained growing attention.
One reason is their impact on the nervous system.[6,7]
Many individuals in recovery experience heightened stress reactivity. The body becomes conditioned to respond to discomfort, uncertainty, or emotional distress with intense physiological activation. This state can increase cravings and make it more difficult to maintain healthy coping mechanisms.
Meditation and rhythmic breathing practices appear to work in the opposite direction, with one study showing a 52 percent reduction rate in depression via meditation in just eight weeks. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, they help shift the body out of a chronic fight-or-flight state and into one associated with rest, recovery, and regulation.[6,7]
