That may not sound like a particularly radical activity, but in an era when many people are concerned about losing their proclivity for reading in print, the act of picking up a book can feel like a deliberate demonstration of defiance.

A lifelong reader for whom physical books reign supreme, even I am noticing a difference in my reading habits.

It is so easy and passive to sit endlessly scrolling on social media, letting the inane pet videos, cooking clips, ads for questionable gadgets, stupid life hacks and AI slop wash over you — no effort or concentration required — until you realize with a start that an hour has gone by.

Like many people, I am also becoming more determined to release myself from the grip of Big Tech.

Not that you can’t do lots of solid reading online. That’s how I read newspapers these days, and magazine........
