BOB WAKEHAM: Where's the objectivity? MOU appears sunk before report released
Even before the Churchill Falls independent review is released, the PC government is sending clear signals it won't proceed with the deal, depriving NL of billions
If, in fact, this rather mind blowing Newfoundland/Quebec MOU — presently being analyzed to death — would fill the province’s coffers with a monstrous payday as a result of the immediate disengagement from the 1969 Upper Churchill contract, rather than waiting until the agreement expires in 2041, it just seems incongruous that Premier Tony Wakeham seems determined to allow this unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform itself into a “Newfie” joke.

I can already hear the echoes of the tones of mockery bouncing along the corridors of the Quebec National Assembly:
“Did you hear da one about dem stupid Newfies throwing billions of bucks down the drain?”
“Oh la la! Just how stunned are dem Newfies?”
I’d bet the vast majority of the half-million-plus residents of this perpetually broke province are starting to see evidence that a palpably lucrative deal, at least the potential for such a deal, is heading metaphorically for the Robin Hood Bay dump, down with the ravenous rats and gulls.
The MOU — an abbreviation that’s become a familiar expression in households throughout the province — could very well find a prominent spot in Newfoundland’s long history of broken dreams.
