While Thomas Burleigh ended up being unopposed for the party’s top job, the process was not without its share of drama. The convention was held Feb. 7, which turned out to be the same day as the leadership race was decided for the governing Progressive Conservatives.  

That is the first time in recent memory that more than one party chose a new leader on the same day. The New Democrats actually announced their convention first and Conservative organizers indicated they were unaware of that fact when they picked a date.
