Work continues on new Buckhorn firehall and public works depot

Construction of a new Buckhorn firehall and public works depot is well underway and on schedule.

At last September’s council meeting, councillors awarded a contract to Dalren Limited for the construction of a new firehall and depot at 8 Melody Bay Rd., the site of the current firehall.

The existing firehall was built in the early 1980s. At the time it was built, it was an impressive structure for the fire department.

The fire department came to Buckhorn in 1955. A cottager and firefighter from Toronto provided advice and loaned some simple equipment.

After a local firefighter, Tommy Mason, was given a demonstration of the equipment, he gained support from local businesses ($1,200) to purchase a seven horsepower pump and 50 feet of wide hose, with two additional narrow hoses and various nozzles.
