Perhaps the old playoff format would have benefited the Dallas Stars
After reaching the Western Conference finals in three consecutive seasons, the Dallas Stars were eliminated in round one of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs by the Minnesota Wild.
The Wild dispatched the Stars in six games, thanks to the exceptional play of Matt Boldy, Kirill Kaprizov, and Quinn Hughes. The three Wild stars combined for 26 points over six contests. Boldy was the offensive catalyst for the Wild, notching six goals.
If a team is a true contender in the NHL’s second season, they will eventually go head to head with another powerhouse for a chance to sip out of Lord Stanley’s Cup.
The question is whether or not the NHL’s playoff seeding punishes teams for having outstanding regular seasons. If a team has a tremendous regular season it should be rewarded with a more favourable matchup in the first round series.
