Pakistan’s exemplary diplomacy

THE world was on the verge of World War III when at this critical juncture, Pakistan emerged as a key diplomatic actor, while de-escalating tensions and facilitating dialogue between the two long-standing adversaries, the US & Iran.

Through neutrality and proactive engagement, Pakistan positioned itself as a credible mediator and contributed meaningfully to global peace efforts. This diplomatic intervention has increasingly been recognized as a major success, highlighting Pakistan’s growing significance in international conflict resolution.

With the recent rising hostilities and a wider war-risk, the need for a trusted mediator became urgent. Pakistan stepped into this role effectively by leveraging its historically balanced relations with both Washington and Tehran. By maintaining neutrality and advocating dialogue over confrontation, Pakistan reopened communication channels that had long been closed. A major diplomatic breakthrough was Pakistan’s role in bringing both parties to the negotiating table for high-level talks after decades of limited direct engagement. The Islamabad Peace Talks marked a historic moment, as direct dialogue between US and Iranian officials had been largely absent since the aftermath of the 1979 revolution. Pakistan’s ability to facilitate such engagement demonstrated its diplomatic credibility and strategic significance on the global stage.

One of Pakistan’s most significant contributions was brokering a temporary two-week ceasefire. This pause in hostilities reduced the immediate risk of escalation and created space for negotiations. The ceasefire allowed both sides to reassess their positions and opened the door for further diplomatic engagement. Observers noted that Pakistan’s neutral stance enabled it to convey messages between the two parties without suspicion, which is rare in such polarized conflicts.

Pakistan played a central role in organizing the negotiations. Islamabad became a hub for diplomacy, hosting delegations from both the US and Iran that made our eastern neighbour quite uncomfortable but got appreciated by the majority. Negotiations reportedly lasted for extended hours, reflecting the complexity of the discussions. Pakistani leadership conducted separate bilateral meetings with each side before initiating trilateral talks, ensuring a strategic diplomatic approach.

Pakistan coordinated with regional powers including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt while engaging with the primary parties . This broader diplomatic effort helped build consensus and increased pressure on both the US and Iran to pursue dialogue rather than confrontation. Such multilateral engagement enhanced the legitimacy of the peace process and reinforced Pakistan’s facilitating role.

Despite these achievements, a comprehensive and lasting resolution has yet to be reached. The negotiations have faced setbacks, largely due to deep-rooted mistrust. However, it is imperative to understand that such a prolonged history of this complex conflict could not be resolved in a single day. Diplomacy is not an event rather a process and negotiation is a continuous arrangement rather than an abrupt solution.

Nevertheless, the progress made through Pakistan’s efforts is significant. The ceasefire and ongoing dialogue have helped prevent further military escalation, reducing immediate threats to global stability. A potential agreement could also ensure the reopening of key routes like the Strait of Hormuz, stabilizing global oil supplies and easing economic uncertainty. Moreover, continued engagement could foster trust, reduce regional tensions, and contribute to peace-making.

Hence, Pakistan’s diplomatic intervention during the US–Iran conflict demonstrates its ability as a responsible actor in global affairs. By promoting negotiations, Pakistan has not only helped avert a potential war risk but also strengthened its position as a credible mediator. While challenges remain, the efforts undertaken provide hope for sustained peace and cooperation in the future.
