Independence beyond Bunyan-un-Marsoos, Makkah agreement

AS Pakistan celebrated its 79th Independence Day on 14 August 2026, the occasion carried significance far beyond the traditional rituals of flag-hoisting, patriotic songs and national speeches. The country entered its 80th year with a renewed sense of strategic confidence, shaped by military developments, diplomatic realignment and a growing recognition of its importance in the security architecture of South Asia and the wider Muslim world.

The defining feature of this Independence Day is the transformation in Pakistan’s strategic standing. The May 2025 confrontation with India became a watershed moment. The four-day conflict from May 7 to 10 brought the two nuclear-armed neighbours dangerously close to a wider war. Pakistan’s military response, “Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos”, demonstrated that Islamabad possessed the capability and political will to respond decisively to Indian military aggression.

In Pakistan, May 10 is consequently remembered as a day of national resilience and military success. It is important to distinguish between political narratives and independently verifiable battlefield assessments: both India and Pakistan presented their own accounts of the conflict and claimed successes. What is beyond dispute is that the confrontation ended after four days without developing into a prolonged conventional war, while Pakistan’s response fundamentally altered the strategic conversation surrounding........
