Balochistan Province: Where local grievances meet global geopolitics

BALOCHISTAN has remained Pakistan’s most strategically important and security-sensitive province for decades. Its vast territory, mineral resources, energy potential and coastline along the Arabian Sea make it central to Pakistan’s economic future, while its location at the intersection of South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East gives it exceptional geopolitical significance. Yet, despite this potential, the province has suffered persistent violence, political instability, underdevelopment and a crisis of public trust. The security situation remains deeply concerning.

On September 8, 2026, security forces killed 11 militants and recovered approximately 2.9 tons of explosives during separate intelligence-based operations in Kharan and Washuk districts. Such operations reflect the continuing challenge posed by militant networks operating in the province. In recent months, security forces have also conducted numerous operations against terrorist groups. In fact, terrorist and separatist organizations operating in the province receive external support, financing and abetment from India and Israel.

Foreign actors exploit existing vulnerabilities, but those vulnerabilities are largely rooted in domestic political, economic and governance challenges. Poverty, unemployment, inadequate public services, political alienation, weak institutional capacity and perceptions of inequitable resource distribution have created conditions in which terrorists’ narratives can find space. Therefore, Pakistan’s response must address both dimensions simultaneously: preventing external exploitation and resolving legitimate grievances........
