Trans people deserve science-backed care

Briarwood: I’m responding to President Trump’s unscientific, immoral and illegal bias and discrimination against persons of transgender identity. Trump’s assertion of only two psychologic genders corresponding to only two biologic sexes is patently false. Indeed, there are two biologic sexes (phenotypes) as evidenced by Mendelian chromosomal genotypes and binary reproductive anatomy and neuroendocrine physiology. However, gender identity is a non-binary psychological spectrum with 74 gender identities, as social constructivist theories suggest.

The dominant scenario is when gender identity is correspondent with the anatomic sex (cis). However, in a minority population, there is a non-correspondence of biologic sex with self-perceived identity of gender (trans). Psychologically, such people have varying levels of gender dysphoria and emotional co-morbidities resultant from the incongruity between physical sex and gender identity.

Studies suggest a neurohistologic dimorphism in the limbic system of brains of transgendered people that explains it. The development of non-invasive, high-resolution brain imaging technology could assist in laboratory diagnosis of transsexualism. Stem cell therapy may then be an alternative to the radical Harry Benjamin standard model of gender care (hormones and/or surgery). Further neurological gender research and care are suggested sound practices. The French-Algerian philosopher Jacques Derrida asserted that Western thought must be deconstructed of this binary description of reality.
