Even ICE must obey federal judges’ orders: No civil arrests are allowing in immigration court
On Monday, Manhattan Federal Judge Kevin Castel ordered that ICE agents could not arrest people appearing at immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza downtown (and 201 Varick St. and 290 Broadway), which is the right ruling as those folks were just trying to follow the law and attend their hearings having waited for as long as a year.
But that reasonable relief was short-lived, as the very next day ICE agents arrested a 21-year-old Honduran man as he was leaving his hearing, flouting Castel’s order in front of a crowd of journalists and outraged observers.
The order included a few very narrow exceptions, including national security and extreme public safety threats, but ICE has not bothered to even try to claim that this circumstance fit the bill. In fact, the masked agents were very comfortable undercutting the idea that........
