Kai Stephens, 22, from Norwich, stood for the British Democrats in the by-election and garnered 132 votes - not enough to prevent him from losing his £500 deposit.

But Mr Stephens and his party - whose founders include former members of the British National Party and which advocates "remigration" of immigrants to prevent what it described as the "demographic replacement" of British people - said the campaign's aims had been met.

Mr Stephens, posting on X, said the campaign had been "worth every penny, worth every minute".

He said: "I'm the first MP candidate to run on a platform of remigration. Regardless of vote, it's an achievement I'm proud of."

He said he had never said he was going to win.

He said: "I said I was going to wage all-out meta-political war on the establishment. I have achieved my aim."
