Mistral unveils Le Chonk, a trillion-parameter open-weight AI model

Mistral has launched Le Chonk, its trillion-parameter Mistral Large 4 model, in public API preview. The open weights are planned for October 27, but independent testing and deployment requirements remain key unknowns.

French AI company Mistral has unveiled Mistral Large 4, a trillion-parameter frontier model carrying the playful nickname “Le Chonk”. The model entered public API preview on October 6, while Mistral says downloadable weights will arrive later this month.

The release is Mistral’s attempt to push open-weight AI closer to the strongest closed systems from US companies and leading models from China. For Indian developers and businesses, the main appeal is control. Open weights can be deployed on private infrastructure, although running a model this large will demand costly hardware and experienced teams.
