After Chidambaram questions BRICS gains, Tharoor highlights India’s global diplomatic role

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has defended the relevance of BRICS, saying India’s hosting of the summit demonstrates its diplomatic convening power and provides an important platform for the Global South. However, he acknowledged challenges within the grouping, including differences over global conflicts and India’s growing trade imbalance with BRICS members.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has backed the importance of BRICS ahead of the grouping’s summit in Delhi, arguing that the platform gives India an opportunity to bring major Global South countries together.

His comments came a day after senior Congress leader P Chidambaram questioned whether India had gained tangible benefits from recent BRICS meetings.

Tharoor said the grouping represents a significant section of the global population and economy and should therefore be taken seriously internationally.
